Matt Spinder is this month’s CFF Spotlight Athlete! Matt started at CrossFit Fairport shortly after we moved to the new location. He had done CrossFit before and right away we could see he was a fan of the Olympic lifts (had great form and focus on those!). Was not so much a fan of the endurance/stamina aspect of CrossFit as he used to give me death stares mid-WOD. He has made incredible gains at the gym and when he began focusing on a better diet he really transformed. He recently became CrossFit Level 1 certified and now coaches classes. He’s a great addition to our training staff!
How long have you been CrossFitting?I started CrossFit in 2013. I remember not knowing what I was getting into, I didn’t bring water to the onramp and was very politely told I should bring water next time.
How did you start? My original plan was to work out for a couple months just to be a little better prepared for a Tough Mudder. A coworker found CrossFit Fairport and recommended we try it to prepare. Little did I know that I would become completely hooked by the gym and community here.
What is your favorite movement or workout? The snatch, there is nothing like the snatch that uses so many physical skills in a single movement (and it’s just a fun lift). I also really enjoy the push required for Hero WODs.
What’s your most challenging movement or workout? The deadlift is my most challenging movement. I have been stuck at the same weight for many years now. Also, fast paced, high stamina WODs are a weakness of mine.
What do you love about it?It’s like a playground for adults. You meet so many great people, make incredible friendships, all while running around playing with stuff. And I can’t say enough about the community here, everyone is supportive and friendly and has turned this introvert into someone with a Facebook and Instagram account (although I still won’t post).
What can you do today that you couldn’t do before CrossFit, or what do you do better?I feel like the only good answer for this is that everything is better. Inside the gym, I am performing movements and lifting weights that I never would have thought possible 6 years ago. And outside the gym I feel like everything I do is easier and done with more energy.
What is your occupation?I am a Senior Software Engineer at Omega TMM, a small company in Fairport that sells measuring equipment to manufacturers.
Does CrossFit ever make your job easier?Yes! While my job is not physically demanding (I spend most of the day in my seat), CrossFit has drastically reduced my stress levels at work. Which in turn allows me to do my job more efficiently with a level head. And looking forward to the after-work gym time can be motivating.
Do you have other hobbies or activities? No… does coaching at CrossFit Fairport counts an activity?
What advice would you give to a brand-new CrossFit Fairport member?First, stick with it. Even with the great community, it can sometimes be daunting. You will improve quickly. Second, make friends. This should not be too difficult as there are so many friendly people here. And lastly, set goals. I like to find people better than me and set a goal to get to their level. Not in a competitive way, but for my improvement.
