How long have you been CrossFitting?I’ve only been a member of Crossfit Fairport, and that’ll be 8 years this June.
How did you start?I was particularly unimpressed with the standard stuff that I had been doing over the years and my running wasn’t enough to keep me excited. A buddy of mine was telling me about crossfit and I’d seen mention of it on social media. I decided to con my daughter Sydney to try it out with me and I’ve never looked back.
What is your favorite movement or workout?Any workout that contains body weight exercises is gonna be fun for me. The movement that I find is my favorite is the squat snatch. It’s the biggest test of where your strength and mindset are at any given time, in my opinion. If your mindset is right, you can do some pretty amazing things.
What’s your most challenging movement or workout?Right now that has to be walking on my hands. I just feel like a fish out of water and it’s obvious if one were to witness it. That is my obstacle to overcome this year though. (My biggest one)
What do you love about it?A few things really. For one thing, it makes the physical stuff that I have to do on a daily basis outside of the gym much easier, but it also varies so much every day, week and month, that it holds my attention. I just never get bored. You also have to keep working at it just to maintain your level of skill or fitness. It’s easy to get complacent on a skill and then find out that, crap, this movement isn’t working for me. I better put some time on it to get good at it again.
What can you do today that you couldn’t do before CrossFit, or what do you do better? My mobility with regards to my shoulders and joints is much better. That has been a process though. Learning and developing good form when doing any of the Crossfit movements, is and should be paramount. When done wrong, stuff hurts, and when done right, everything works better. At 52, I can easily say that I have never been more able to do anything.
What is your occupation?I’m the managing partner of a wealth management firm in Brighton. Cadence Wealth Management Solutions.
Does CrossFit ever make your job easier? It keeps my mind sharper and more agile for sure. Does it make it easier to sit in a chair all day? Nope. It makes it worse.
Do you have any CFF ‘memorable’ moments?Tons, but working out with Sydney and teaming up with her for team events, the annual international Crossfit Open competition, The Michael Murphy wod every Memorial Day and the CFF Christmas Party.
Do you have other hobbies or activities?Running, skiing, hunting, fishing and following the Yankees. I do enjoy beer and holiday pie too. These are all things that I’m better at now.
What advice would you give to a brand-new CrossFit Fairport member?Get to know this group of people. They’re fun, smart, strong, always willing to help and ruthless when they train. They’ll be your biggest supporters and the ones that push you the hardest. You’ll be amazed at what they CAN do, what they’ll do to get better and what they’ll do for you so you get better. Work hard, don’t try to overdo it (you still probably will anyway), laugh and always remember to have fun.
