Kara Mathis was selected as our May Spotlight Athlete! Kara is an amazing athlete and we have watched her work hard at new skills and she has made so many improvements. All her family has come to CFF (husband Brendan, son Ryan, and youngest son Jacob who knows everyone by name!) We look forward to getting to know Kara a little better as this month’s Spotlight Athlete!

How long have you been CrossFitting?

I started CrossFit in November 2013. After doing my onramp, I completed my first WOD on Thanksgiving Day which is appropriate since I have so many things to be thankful for since I started at CFF.

How did you start?

My husband, Brendan, had been trying to get me to try CrossFit. He started earlier in 2013 and kept telling me that I would love it. I would get so frustrated when he talked to me about it as I did not think I would enjoy it. I tried many different forms of exercise but just could not find the right match for me. Brendan kept telling me I needed to find something for “me” as I was so hyper focused on being a mom and work that I did not do anything for me. My son, Ryan, started CFF kids bootcamp in the fall of 2013. I would stay and watch him and one day decided to just do it and I am so grateful that I finally listened to Brendan and started at CFF.

What do you love about it?

The community and camaraderie. I’ve made the best of friends and it really is like a big family. At times, dysfunctional (in the best way) but everyone is extremely supportive and motivating. You are continuously forced out of your comfort zone and pushed to the limits, and it’s an incredible sense of accomplishment when you’re done and a real boost of confidence! Every day is something new and fun and you’re always learning.

What is your favorite movement or workout?

I love clean and jerks. I also love Hero WODS (most of them) and Vegas WODS. I am a big fan of Atlas stone- to-shoulder and double-under jump ropes.

What’s your most challenging movement or workout?

Squat snatch is one of my most challenging movements. In terms of workouts, WODS that involve a lot of running are more challenging for me


What do you love about it?

There is not much I don’t love (well except running and I am getting better at that). Here are just a few things I love: the people, the coaches, those who encourage you, those that push me to be better, the energy level I have when I leave, the fact that when I am there I don’t think about anything else, how much stronger I have gotten, how much more confidence I have in myself (in life and at CFF), the fact that I can bring my three year old with me and everyone there interacts with him.

What can you do today that you couldn’t do before CrossFit, or what do you do better?

I can do SO much more now than I could before. I can do pull-ups, double-unders, I can deadlift over 200 lb, clean over 100 lb’s, RX WODS (do them as prescribed with weights and movements) and be a mother to two children. We were unable to have a second child until we both found CrossFit. I learned how to do something for ME and how to eat healthy. Once I stopped stressing so much and learned how to take care of myself, we became pregnant. It is crazy how much CrossFit has changed my life for the better.

What is your occupation?

I am a school-based Speech-Language Pathologist and I LOVE my job! I work with kids in kindergarten through second grade and get my summers and holidays off with my kids.
